Mitral valve endocarditis due to Staphylococcus capitis in a very old woman Un caso di endocardite della valvola mitrale da Staphylococcus capitis in donna anziana

چکیده
Infective endocarditis is most frequent in over 65 years old subjects, often due to Streptococci and Staphylococci . Among uncommon pathogens, only twelve cases of natural valve endocarditis by Staphylococcus capitis with mean age of seventy years have been described (the younger patient is 29 and the oldest 80 years old) 2 . Among these cases, six are mitralic, four aortic and one both . The infection of mitral valve seems to increase the risk of cerebrovascular complications such as stroke described in 20-40% cases . In particular the migration of a fragment or the whole vegetation in the cerebral circulation are the most important causes of neurological events . Even if the neurological complications by infective endocarditis are common , only one patient with Staphylococcus capitis infection and neurological complications has been described, which died . Among risk factors for neurological events, one of the most important is the size of vegetation. In fact, a vegetation > 10 mm in diameter predisposes for neurological embolization, in particular in the middle cerebral artery territory. Neurological complications are linked to disability and increase death rate . Finally, among Staphylococcus capitis endocarditis, death is occasionally reported: in fact, only two patients died, one for neurological complications 6 and one for multi-organ failure . casE rEport caso clinico

Prosthetic valve endocarditis caused by Staphylococcus capitis: report of 4 cases
Although Staphylococcus capitis is considered to be a rare causative organism for prosthetic valve endocarditis, we report 4 such cases that were encountered at our hospital over the past 2 years. Case 1 was a 79-year-old woman who underwent aortic valve replacement with a bioprosthetic valve and presented with fever 24 days later. Transesophageal echocardiography revealed an annular abscess in...
متن کاملStaphylococcus capitis endocarditis: two cases and review of the literature.
Coagulase negative staphylococci are the principal cause of prosthetic valve endocarditis but are a rare cause of native valve infections. However, the incidence of native valve endocarditis is increasing. Staphylococcus capitis is a coagulase negative staphylococcus with the capacity to cause endocarditis on native heart valves. Two cases of native valve endocarditis caused by S capitis are pr...

متن کاملStaphylococcus lugdunensis Endocarditis Complicated by Embolism in an 18-Year-Old Woman with Mitral Valve Prolapse
Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a coagulase-negative staphylococcus (CNS). It is a major cause of prosthetic valve endocarditis; mitral valve prolapse (MVP) has emerged as a prominent predisposing structural cardiac abnormality. We describe a case of Staphylococcus lugdunensis endocarditis in an 18-year-old woman with preexisting mitral valve prolapse complaining of fever, a one-month history of ...
متن کاملInter-Operative Time between Neurosurgery and Cardiac Surgery for Native Valve Endocarditis
Introduction: Infective endocarditis is well known to produce neurologic complications from septic emboli, which mandates a multidisciplinary approach between neurosurgery and cardiac surgery. However, literature is not clear as to the optimal interval length between neurosurgery and cardiac surgery.Presentation of Cases: The first case involves a 60-year-old woman with significant past medical...
